What is Spirituality to You?

So what is spirituality to you? It can mean so many things to so many people. Is is tied to a religion for you? Or is it some kind of woowoo weird meaning that is tied only to witches?

To me, it is a way of growing personally in relation to a higher power. It is finding your true Self with the help of Spirit, God, the Universe or whatever you want to call your higher power. To me it means having faith, knowing that the Universe, Spirit or God is guiding us. I believe in divine synchronicities or interventions. And it doesn’t have to be connected to “something out there”. It is how you spend your time inside your head and your body. It is respecting our fellow humans and knowing that love is the answer. Spirituality to me is living the best life we know how to live with faith and grace. And when our lives turn dark, it is a comfort in knowing that we are loved and supported by our higher power and that there is a knowing that everything will be ok.

In my mind, how could there not be a higher power. Look at the planet. It works in perfect synchronicity with all aspects of it. The living beings, the air, the water, the sun, the materials that the planet produces in order for us to survive. How could something like this exist without something bigger than this to help create it and survive in perfect harmony. And then you look at the human body and its complexities from the brain down to each little vein and nerve with all serving an important purpose. How could I not think there was something bigger helping us orchestrate all of this? I am always in awe of life’s systems and global connections.

But I also call myself the most non-spiritual spiritual person since I do not accept one religion as my one and only in my life. I think all religions have their purpose and reasons for existence. I can understand why they believe in what they do but I just don’t believe in all aspects of it. But I’ve never found just one that I can say is my only belief. I do not say one religion is better than another and I also respect everyone’s beliefs, they are just not mine. In my early 20’s, when I was searching for the meaning of a higher power, God and religion, a woman who was a staunch Christian said I was a lost soul because I didn’t believe in Jesus as my only savior. My brain went to a place saying “wait a minute, I’m just as good a person as anyone else, how could I be thought of as a bad person because I didn’t believe the same is her?” It left a bad taste in my mouth. You see, I was raised Catholic but it never registered with me. I never understood it very well and I certainly didn’t understand what the heck the bible was saying. So I wasn’t sure what I believed in at that time. But now, I just have a basic belief in a higher power, or God and that is about the extent of my belief.

How about you? I am curious as to what you believe in and why?
